Free-tail Bats take flight in Texas!

Austin TX: Waiting under the Congress Ave bridge for the nightly flight of roughly 1.5 million free-tailed bats. These bats winter in Mexico and return each spring to Austin. At least 750,000 bat pups are born here each summer. The bats emerge at dusk each day to feed on millions of insects, many of them pests. There are about 200 people here waiting to experience Austin's most famous mammals.

"As Time Goes By"

A new book by Abigail Trafford that looks more closely at legacy, love and loss in the last 20-30 years of life. I'm here with her now at Furman as she describes her research, talking with those of us who have lived a while on this earth. Things like "New road - No rules" and "throwback couples" promise to make a delightful read. I'll get me a copy for her to sign.

Snow snow snow everywhere!

Snow covers everything. It started falling about 5 yesterday downtown. By the time I left Coffee Underground about 8 pm the streets were slick and snow was piling up. I took a route with few hills but was defeated by a crown street, bald rear tyres and deep snow. The Miata could not get traction with the snow piled up in the middle. Parked side of street with the help of a good samaritan. This morning the doos are frozen shut so it's time to wait for the sun to thaw it out and melt the ice on the street. Did I mention a kind soul gave me a ride the last few blocks home and I walked this morning. Got several pix and will post to Picasa or Flickr. . .
